Modernizing prescription workflows in one of Europe’s most regulated markets
We helped a German health tech startup digitize prescriptions, then came back to modernize what the rush left behind.
A German health tech startup was moving to digitize prescription workflows before legislation changed the market forever. We embedded early, built fast, and then came back years later to clean up what the pressure had left behind.
The challenge
Building in German healthcare means navigating strict regulations, fragmented stakeholders, legacy systems, and the highest possible standards around patient safety and data protection. Our client was working to automate recurring prescriptions for patients managing chronic conditions, routing prescriptions directly to their preferred pharmacy and eliminating repeated doctor visits and pharmacy trips. German legislation was moving toward mandatory digital prescriptions nationwide, and the opportunity was clear: be first to market and capture adoption before a state-backed solution arrived.
Our approach
The first phase was intense and in-person. We worked as a fully integrated part of the team, contributing to product decisions, design, and implementation under serious time pressure. In the second phase, an initially unstructured setup created drift, and we course-corrected by transitioning to a proper Scrum setup with regular refinements and clear responsibilities. One of the more meaningful technical moments was making the case for adopting Laravel and its ecosystem rather than continuing to build custom solutions from scratch. We built that case through concrete demos and hands-on examples rather than arguments, and it changed how the team thought about tooling. Across both phases, our work covered the initial mobile and web prescription platform, ongoing feature development, refactoring and modernizing core systems, improving code quality, and introducing structured delivery practices that stuck.
The result
The product became more robust, maintainable, and built to modern standards. The internal team moved faster, had more confidence in what they were shipping, and had a clearer foundation to build on. The broader market didn’t play out the way our client had hoped, with the state-backed solution becoming the dominant competitor, but the technical work we did together gave the product real longevity. The company is still operating and evolving today.
Why this matters to us
Healthcare requires a level of precision that pushes you to be better at every stage of the work. This project reinforced how important it is to be assertive about technical quality, to treat engagements as true partnerships, and to build things that are meant to last. The lessons we took from working inside Germany’s healthcare system are ones we carry into every regulated environment we work in.
